"What Soviet people were fighting for?" - Translation of a historical book on WWII

One of my friends recently started translation from Russian to English of a historical book about Nazi crimes on the Sovien Union territory. The guy is greate translator indeed, but still is not native English speaker and he is desperate for some feedback.
